Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī Ḥadīth [6496] – Authority given to those who do not deserve it is a sign of loss of honesty

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سِنَانٍ، حَدَّثَنَا فُلَيْحُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ، حَدَّثَنَا هِلاَلُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ، عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ يَسَارٍ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللّٰهُ عَنْهُ، قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللّٰهِ صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: >إِذَا ضُيِّعَتِ الأَمَانَةُ فَانْتَظِرِ السَّاعَةَ<، قَالَ: كَيْفَ إِضَاعَتُهَا يَا رَسُولَ اللّٰهِ؟ قَالَ: >إِذَا أُسْنِدَ الأَمْرُ إِلَى غَيْرِ أَهْلِهِ فَانْتَظِرِ السَّاعَةَ<

Translation
Ḥadīth [6496]: It is narrated on the authority of Abū Hurayrah [d. 57H] (may Allāh be pleased with him) that he said: The Messenger of Allāh (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) said: “When honesty is lost, then wait for the Hour.” It was asked: ‘How will honesty be lost, O Allāh’s Messenger?’ He said: “When authority is given to those who do not deserve it, then wait for the Hour.”
