Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī Ḥadīth [2025] – I’tikāf in the last ten days of Ramaḍān

حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللّٰهِ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي ابْنُ وَهْبٍ، عَنْ يُونُسَ، أَنَّ نَافِعًا، أَخْبَرَهُ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللّٰهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللّٰهُ عَنْهُمَا، قَالَ: >كَانَ رَسُولُ اللّٰهِ صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَعْتَكِفُ العَشْرَ الأَوَاخِرَ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ<

Translation
Ḥadīth [2025]: It is narrated on the authority of ‘Abdullāh bin ‘Umar [d. 73H/74H] (may Allāh be pleased with them both) that he said: ‘The Messenger of Allāh (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) used to practice i’tikāf in the last ten days of the month of Ramaḍān.’

Commentary by Ḥāfiẓ Ṣalāḥuddīn Yūsuf (Riyāḍuṣ Ṣāliḥīn)
We learn from these aḥādīth that the observance of i’tikāf in the last ten days of Ramaḍān is sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him). But it can be done only in masājid not at home. I’tikāf helps to enhance one’s spiritual growth and to strive hard to worship Allāh better as there is nothing to distract one’s attention from this noble pursuit.
