Book 36: Tribulations
Chapter 23: Patience at the time of calamity

Ḥadīth [4034]: It was narrated from Abī Dardā’ (may Allah be pleased with him) that my close friend (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) advised me: “Do not associate anything with Allāh, even if you are cut and burned. Do not neglect any prescribed prayer deliberately, for whoever neglects it deliberately no longer has the protection of Allāh. And do not drink wine, for it is the key to all evil.”

a) Polytheism (setting partners with Allāh) is the greatest sin, so it should be avoided in all circumstances, no matter how severe they are.
b) Sacrificing one’s life for the sake of monotheism (Oneness of Allāh) is a cause of great pride.
c) The greatest sin after polytheism is neglecting prayers, which is similar to disbelief.
d) Drunkenness covers one’s mind, thus it becomes easy for such a person to commit any sin. Therefore, a Muslim should avoid all kinds of intoxicants.
