Book [57]: Anger
Chapter [644]: Do not let your anger be destruction

Ḥadīth [1322]: ‘Umar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb (may Allāh be pleased with him) said: “Do not let your love be a total infatuation. Do not let your anger be destruction. I asked: How is that? He replied: When you love, you are infatuated like a child. When you hate, you desire destruction for your companion.”

Loving a person should be for the sake of Allāh the Exalted; likewise hating. However, some of the people develop unreasoning love for or passion in people leading them to behave irrationally. Similarly, when they dislike a person, they desire that such persons are put to destruction! These two extremes demonstrate that their love and hatred are not for the sake of Allāh and this is disapproved – and the refuge is only with Allāh.

(1) Whether in matters of love or hate, a Muslim is always bound by the limits set by Allāh. His standard for loving and hating should be Allāh, the Exalted, and His Messenger, and in every matter he should seek the way that is just. Even hatred for the enemy should be within the right limits. Instead of wishing him death and destruction, one should wish that he be guided rightly. This is also the way of the Messenger of Allāh (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him). Merely wishing to destroy someone is not something virtuous per se.
(2) Note that what is meant here is love for Allāh. Talking about overwhelming lust and beguiling love between girls and boys is generally not permissible and disobedience to Allāh..
