3. Sunan Abī Dāwūd

It is narrated on the authority of ‘Abdullāh ibn ‘Amr ibn al-‘Āṣ (may Allāh be pleased with them both) that he said: I used to write everything which I heard from the Messenger of Allāh (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him). I intended (by it) to memorize it. The Quraysh prohibited me saying: Do you write everything that you hear from him while the Messenger of Allāh (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) is a human being: He speaks in anger and pleasure? So I stopped writing, and mentioned it to the Messenger of Allāh (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him). He signaled with his finger to his mouth and said: “Write! by Him in Whose hand my soul lies, nothing comes from it except the truth.”

It is narrated on the authority of Sahl bin Sa’d (may Allāh be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) said: “By Allāh, if Allāh were to guide one man at your hand, it would be better for you than red camels.”

It is narrated on the authority of Umm Salamah (may Allāh be pleased with her) that she said: ‘When the verse “That they should cast their outer garments over their persons” was revealed, the women of Anṣār came out as if they had crows over their heads by wearing outer garments.’

It is reported on the authority of 'Abdullāh that he said: The Messenger of Allāh (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) said: “Whom do you consider a wrestler among you?” The people replied: (the man) whom the men cannot defeat in wrestling. He said: “No, it is he who controls himself when he is angry.”

It is narrated on the authority of Abī ‘Umāmah [al-Bāhilī] that he said: The Messenger of Allāh (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) said: “I guarantee a house in the surroundings of Paradise for a man who avoids quarrelling even if he were in the right, a house in the middle of Paradise for a man who avoids lying even if he were joking, and a house in the upper part of Paradise for a man who made his character good.”

It is narrated on the authority of Mu'āwiyah that he said: I heard the Messenger of Allāh (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) say: “If you search for the faults of the people, you will corrupt them, or will nearly corrupt them.”

It is narrated on the authority of Thawbān (may Allāh be pleased with him) that he said: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) said: “If any woman asks her husband for divorce without some strong reason, the fragrance of Paradise will be forbidden to her.”

It is narrated on the authority of ‘Abdullāh bin ’Amr bin al-’Āṣ (may Allāh be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) said: “Those who do not show mercy to our young ones and do not realize the right of our elders are not from us.”

It is narrated on the authority of Thawbān (may Allāh be pleased with him) that he said: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) said: “The people will soon summon one another to attack you as people when eating invite others to share their dish.” Someone asked: Will that be because of our small numbers at that time? He replied: “No, you will be numerous at that time: but you will be scum and rubbish like that carried down by a torrent, and Allāh will take fear of you from the breasts of your enemy and last enervation (wahn) into your hearts.” Someone asked: What is wahn? O Messenger of Allāh (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him). He replied: “Love of the world and dislike of death.”
