حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرٌ، عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ، عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ، عَنْ أَبِي مَعْمَرٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ قَالَ: لَا يَصْلُحُ الْكَذِبُ فِي جِدٍّ وَلَا هَزْلٍ، وَلَا أَنْ يَعِدَ أَحَدُكُمْ وَلَدَهُ شَيْئًا ثُمَّ لَا يُنجِزُ لَهُ

Chapter [180]: Lying is not proper
Ḥadīth [387]: It is narrated on the authority of ‘Abdullāh [bin Mas’ūd] [d. 28H] (may Allāh be pleased with him) that he said: ‘Lying is not correct, neither in seriousness nor in jest. None of you should promise his child something and then not give it to him.’
This narration warns against lying even during jests. Rightly jokes are permissible as mentioned earlier, but they must not include lies. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) in an authentic ḥadīth said: “Woe to the one who talks and lies to make the people laugh. Woe to him, woe to him.” [Sunan Abī Dāwūd (4990); and Sunan at-Tirmidhī (2315)] Quite badly, making promises to children without fulfilling it is from the clear aspects of lying that many discount.
