Book [81]: To make the heart tender (ar-Riqāq)
Chapter [10]:
The fitnah of wealth should be warded off

Ḥadīth [6436]: It is narrated on the authority of ibn ‘Abbās [d. 65H] (may Allāh be pleased with them both) that he said: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) saying: “If the son of Ādam (the human being) had two valleys of money, he would wish for a third, for nothing can fill the belly of Ādam’s son except dust, and Allāh forgives him who repents to Him.”

A human being’s greed for wealth and worldly riches have always been a part of his nature. Even if their houses were filled with wealth and vast fields and forests were packed with them, their hearts would still remain unsatisfied, and they would constantly desire for more. They remain in this state of greed until their final breath, and it is only upon entering the grave that they are freed from this hunger for wealth. Today, landowners, capitalists, industrialists, civil and military bureaucrats, and indeed every merchant, shopkeeper, and employee have become living examples of this desire. However, those who turn their faces away from the world and its wealth toward Allāh and attach themselves to Him receive His special favor; Allāh – the Exalted – grants them peace of heart, contentment of the soul, and satisfaction.
