Book 0: The book of the sunnah
Chapter 1: Following the sunnah of the Messenger of Allāh (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him)

Ḥadīth [1]: It is narrated on the authority of Abī Hurayrah (may Allāh be pleased with him) that he said: The Messenger of Allāh (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) said: “Whatever I have commanded you, do it, and whatever I have forbidden you, refrain from it.”

1: Each and every command of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) is binding on the community. Numerous āyāt of the Qurān confirm the assertion.

2: Anything and everything the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) prohibits must be avoided. Allāh – the Glorified – says in His book: “… And whatever the Messenger gives you, take it; and whatever he forbids you, desist from it…” [Sūrah al-Ḥashr 59: 7]

3: The above quoted āyah proves that a command, as a rule, is binding although in certain contexts it could simply mean preferability or recommendation.
